My Reason For Running
As many of your will be aware, my son Joe, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes two years ago, shortly after his 4th birthday.
My sole reason for running is therefore to raise funds for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). This is the only charity dedicated to funding research and finding a cure.
Most people have heard of diabetes and many assume it is simply a condition that prevents those affected eating sweets and chocolate. The reality is very different. Type 1 diabetes is a chronic life threatening illness that has a lifelong impact on those diagnosed and their families. Children who have Type 1 diabetes rely on multiple insulin injections and blood tests everyday just to stay alive.
The heat and the pain of last years London Marathon is still fresh in my mind, yet despite that I'm back again! The one thing I learnt last year is that nothing can prepare you for the last 5 miles of a marathon. However, when all is said and done, the pain is temporary and very much self inflicted! Those who cope daily with Type 1 diabetes have no choice as the disease cannot be prevented. Despite all Joe has to deal with on a daily basis, he remains full of life and never complains. He is an inspiration to me and gives me the strength to keep running regardless of how hard it gets.
As a parent, I live in hope that medical science will deliver a breakthrough, however significant further research is required and this needs funding.
Video
Many of you will remember the video from last year but please do take the time to watch it again. It explains, better than I ever can, why finding a cure for is so criticaly important for Joe and all children like him.
