Story

Studies have shown that physical fitness may prevent Alzheimer's. I have lost my maternal great-grandmother, maternal grandmother (Mimi) and paternal grandmother (Grandma) to this terrible disease! My odds are incredibly high that I will face this in my lifetime unfortunately but I am hoping to beat the odds (or at least face them head on!)

I remember visiting my great-grandmother in her nursing home as a young girl, I was 8 when she passed and didn't know how to process that. My fondest memories of visiting her comprise of nice nurses & ice cream. I learned at an incredibly young age what Alzheimer's disease was and that I would most likely have it.

Last year, I lost both Mimi & Grandma surrounding our wedding. Mimi was not able to attend and the last time I saw my grandmother was smiling at our wedding. It was quite difficult to have happen surrounding such an important event in my life and wanted to honor them.

It has taken me quite some time to process the grief. It was challenging losing both and I was fortunate that at 29 it was my first time truly experiencing grief. Sadly though before both of their passing, they had both been mentally unavailable from Alzheimer's. It was incredibly difficult watching two strong-willed inspiring women live with this disease and witness the way those surrounding them are affected.

I am comforted knowing that Grandma fought incredibly hard to be at my wedding and I was by Mimi's side as she lost her battle with the disease.

Alzheimer's affects 1 in 10 people over the age of 50 and I am hoping to make a difference in this number. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure and once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity.
