Flora London Marathon 2009 · 26 April 2009 ·

The brain is the most complex organ in our body. It controls our emotions, senses and actions. So when it breaks down, we break down. We fund the best research to discover the causes, develop new treatments and improve the lives of those affected. Let’s unite to accelerate progress. Today.

Story

Sponsor me to run the London marathon in 2009 for THE BRAIN RESEARCH TRUST!

This is not just a test of my determination and stamina; I also want to raise at least £2000 for the Brain Research Trust. Some of you may already know why I am doing this, but for those that don't I will explain why I want to raise the money.

Last summer my dad, suffered a severe blow to the head while kitesurfing which knocked him unconscious. After what felt like the longest two weeks of my life (!), he woke from the coma but unfortunately an MRI scan showed that he had suffered from diffuse axonal injury. This has a wide range of effects, but as my dad hit the front of his head it has affected his memory, emotions and reasoning. Since waking from the coma he spent four further weeks in hospital followed by rehabilitation. This has really improved his condition; from not being able to recognize any of his family and having a memory span of 5 minutes he is now starting to remember people as well as events that have happened in the past. However, because recovery from brain injury is such a slow process, we still do not know whether he will fully recover.

The Brain is an incredible organ, but without it, you cannot function. The Brain Research Trust funds much needed research into some of the 250 brain and neurological diseases and conditions that affect over 2 million people in the UK.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Brain Research Trust gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor me now!

P.S. If running the marathon is not enough of a challenge, I am running the Reading half marathon and Addidas Silverstone half marathon in March in preperation for the full marathon on 26th April. Now that's a challenge and a half.
