I am running the 2010 Edinburgh Marathon (26.2 miles) in aid of a charity called Corpal. Corpal is a not for profit charity for people with Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (known as ACC). ACC is a condition in which the band of fibres (Corpus Callosum) which connects the two sides of the brain fails to develop either partially or fully. This means the brain fails to work as it should and leads to other problems for the individual such as developmental delay, lack of or limited speech, mobility and muscle tone issues, eye problems and also behavioural/social problems.

My son Luke was diagnosed with ACC when he was 15 months old. We knew at his 20 week scan his brain wasn't 'normal' and to cut a very long story short he eventually had an MRI scan on his brain which revealed his lack of  Corpus Callosum. There is no cure and he will not 'grow' a Corpus Callosum, instead it is a condition which he will have to learn to live with just like the other 1 in 4000 people diagnosed per year in the UK. He now attends a special needs nursery and has physiotherapy, speech therapy, hydrotherapy as well as treatment for a squint in his eye and reflux medication to keep his food down. He has just turned three , just crawling and just saying his first words. We are hoping one day he will walk but due to his low tone, dont know if and when it will be.

Like you, we had never heard of ACC before and neither had our GP and other health professionals. That's where Corpal comes into our lives. Corpal is the only charity in the UK which helps people with ACC. It is run by families and carers of people with ACC and offers help, information and guidance for all it's members. The aim of Corpal is to raise awareness of ACC and help more families affected by the condition. Corpal is a very small charity with limited funds, without Corpal,  ACC sufferers and their families have no one. That's why I would like to help Corpal to continue to provide support for all  people with ACC. Corpal also aims to educate health professionals, GP's etc about the condition so it could be diagnosed early. Hopefully in the future Corpal will grow enough to be able to provide grants  in order to provide equipment ,much needed therapies and also maybe finance research into the condition as so little is still understood about ACC.

So rather than spend your money on things you don't really need, think about doing something worthwhile today, hit the donate button and follow the on screen instructions to sponsor me and help a very worthy cause. Your money will safely go straight to Corpal.
