In 2004 the Oldie magazine organised a team to run in the London Marathon, to contribute to the fund-raising efforts of the charity Age Concern. I volunteered to run in this team, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of my previous marathon, in London in 1984!
Well, that went rather well, I ran all the way, and finished in 4:34, which is about half an hour slower than last time - not bad for a 20-year gap. My thighs really hurt for the last hour (and continued to ache for several days), but I felt really good at the end, certainly not exhausted. You can read about my experience that time by clicking here.
Having been re-enthused about running by that experience I decided to keep training and try again, and aim for a faster time. No luck in 2005, but this year I got a place through the ballot. My target time is 4 hours!
My father died with Alzheimer's Disease in 2004, and so it seemed appropriate to use this run to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Research Trust. This site gives you the opportunity to sponsor me. The button above will take you to a secure server where you can make a donation using a credit or bank card. If you are a UK taxpayer this is very tax-efficient - using Gift Aid, your donation will be increased by about 20% (after charges) at no cost to you.
Any donation you are able to make will really be appreciated, whatever the amount - but please try to give generously if you can!
Many thanks in advance.
