WE DID IT!
On Saturday evening, sometime after 10pm, I crossed the finish line of the 148km race of the foolish in Reunion, with a time of 46 hours. It was a fantastic feeling, made even more special by the wild cheering and celebration of the Diageo Reunion team who were "there" for me the whole 2 days of the race!! Thanks to all of you for your financial contribution towards the Madagascar Water Project, and for your emotional support for my run, which I would never have been able to compete without you.
We have done something really good here. It has been inspiring watching the sponsorship level grow towards our target and getting huge support from people all over the world, who have been inspired themselves to change the world in which we live.
Diageo are very active in improving the lives of people all over the world. In Venture Africa we have funded successful water operations changing communities and individuals lives in Burkina Faso, Tanzania and Ethiopa. The money goes to make a genuine and big difference.
Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world, with 70% of it's rural population living on less than $1 per day. 14% of the rural population have access to clean water and 7.5% to adequate sanitation. We will dig new boreholes, construct school block and individual household latrines, put up gravity flow schemes and carry out training and capability build to ensure the projects are mantained. 4,000 will have access to clean water and 2,300 to improved sanitation.
