We raise SUDEP & epilepsy risks awareness to prevent deaths & support those bereaved

Story

Dear All

At midnight on August 10th 2009, I stood on the 4th plinth inTrafalgar Square for an hour, as part of Antony Gormley's art project, One and Other!

I am raising awareness and sponsorship for the work of the charity Epilepsy Bereaved (www.sudep.org).

20 years ago, my older sister Catherine died from SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) at age 29.

Plinths remember and celebrate lives, so this seems a particularly appropriate way to remember her and all the other loved ones who die from epilepsy, usually very young.

3 people die each day, in the UK alone, from Epilepsy related deaths: up to 40% of these deaths could be prevented with improved access to specialist epilepsy care services and improved information provision about risk.

Epilepsy Bereaved support people bereaved by epilepsy and raise awareness, thereby reducing risk.

I am so grateful for your incredibly generous sponsorship: it helped me be brave enough to get up there, and stay up there for an hour! And, I have to say, it was only your support that kept me going: without it, I would have found a reason to back out. .

For those of you who came to Trafalgar Square it was great to see you.

For those of you who rang or texted me on the night, I really appreciate it!

For those of you who were away but have promised to visit this site to donate after the event, thank you too

Alex
