Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

I am taking part in the VSO Youth for Development Programme for a year after my graduation this summer.  VSO is an international development charity that works in over 30 of the world's poorest countries.  The YfD programme is an initiative that sends young people, aged between 18-25, to work on 12 month placements in these countries, working towards one of VSO's specific aims: secure livelihoods, participation and governance, education, disability, HIV and AIDS, and health and social well-being.

My placement:

I did have the offer of going to Tanzania to work with the Chamber of Commerce - which I was very excited about! Unfortunately that has fallen through, and instead I am going to Zambia to work with a youth organisation.  The main objectives of my work will be HIV/AIDS awareness; girl empowerment; tourism promotion and conservation - it sounds really interesting and varied, so I'm looking forward to going out in October.

About me

I have now finally completed my four year degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Southampton and am wanting to put the skills I have developed throughout my course to good use before starting a 'proper' job in the UK!  When I return from my placement, I will be moving to Cambridge to work for an engineering company, to gain the experience necessary to become a chartered engineer.  My eventual aim once I am chartered, is to work on water supplies in developing countries, and my VSO placement will be great experience for this.

Sponsor me...

It costs VSO around £7,500 to send each volunteer overseas and I have to raise a minimum of £900 to help with this.  I'll be having a car boot sale and a treasure hunt to help with my fundraising and contacting local companies, family and friends!  Any amount you are able to give to contribute towards my total will be hugely appreciated.   Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Voluntary Service Overseas will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please support VSO now!

Many thanks.  Alexa x
