Steps 2 Everest Base Camp Expedition 2010 · 26 March 2010

Woking & Sam Beare Hospice is a charity that delivers palliative and end of life care to adult patients of all ages who have life-limiting and terminal illnesses in the North West Surrey region, providing free of charge holistic care and support services both in our hospice and in homes.

Story

I made it to Everest Base Camp and reached an altitude of 5550m at Kala Pattar!

I found the trek to be a real challenge and I still have yet to reach my target for Woking Hospice and the BHF so please do sponsor me if you haven't already.

In the Spring of 2010, a team of young people which includes myself, will be trekking for 3 weeks through the Himalayas to Everest Base Camp in order to raise money for both Woking Hospice and the British Heart Foundation.

Starting at Lukla, Nepal at 2800m above sea level, we will have gained 2600m in height by the time we reach Everest Base Camp at 5400m (17500ft). Our trek will cover 120km (75 miles) in total.

Woking & Sam Beare Hospices is self funded and has to raise £4.9m per annum to keep the hospice doors open which provides care for terminally ill patients and their families. The hospice provides care for people aged 18 and over who have a life limiting illness. The money raised for them will help to maintain care nurses working for one year and aid in recruiting other much needed nurses for the hospice in the local community.

The British Heart Foundation save lives every day, through pioneering research, providing vital information to help people reduce their own heart health risks, campaigning for change and supporting and caring for heart patients. The money raised will go towards child health education to get children living more active lives and the importance of eating healthy food. Child obesity is on the increase in the UK and has risen tenfold over the last 10 years. The BHF is committed, as we all should be, in getting children active and away from tv and computer games and eating real, healthy and nutritious food not the junk that is being advertised by profit hungry junk food corporations.

My fundraising target is £5,000 shared equally between Woking Hospice and The British Heart Foundation.

This expedition will be a life changing experience for me during my gap year and will raise money for these two very worthwhile charities. I hope you will assist me in my efforts for Woking Hospice and the British Heart Foundation so please donate now whatever you can, big or small.

Many thanks for your time,

Alex
