Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge · 3 July 2010

The British Hen Welfare Trust is a national charity which has re-homed more than ONE MILLION hens to date. The charity also informs the public about how they can make a difference to hen welfare, and encourages support for the British egg industry. For more, visit www.bhwt.org.uk.

Story

I am going to be walking the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge on Saturday, July 3rd, raising money for the British Hen Welfare Trust in the process.

This challenging 26 mile hike will incorporate the three highest mountains in the Yorkshire Dales - Pen-y-Ghent (2,277ft), Whernside (2,415ft) and Ingleborough (2,375ft) and I’ll be aiming to complete the course within 12 hours.

Every penny I raise will be donated to the British Hen Welfare Trust, a Devon-based, national charity that re-homes commercial laying hens, educates the public about how they can make a difference to hen welfare, and encourages support for the British egg industry. Its ultimate aim is to see consumers and food manufacturers buying only UK produced free-range eggs, resulting in a strong British egg industry where all commercial laying hens enjoy a good quality life.

The BHWT has found caring, free-range retirement homes for almost 200,000 ex-battery hens destined for slaughter at the end of their commercial laying life, and has hen collection points all over the country.

The BHWT has become very close to my heart in the 2 years since I began to re-home my own beautiful “ex-bats”.  Giving my hens a loving home and glorious, new-found freedom has been such a rewarding experience and I’m thrilled to be doing the 3 Peaks Challenge in support of this tremendous cause.  Every penny I raise will go towards giving some of the 16 million hens still laying cheap eggs in tiny cages that same gift of a happy life outdoors, whilst supporting British free-range farmers.
