BERT'S STORY

1 in 3 of us over 65 will die with Dementia...if you're in any doubt about how awful that fact is, please read below...

Bert was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at the young age of 56, one year after taking early retirement. An adventurer, full of life and fun, he found himself with a physically fit and healthy body but a brain that no longer wanted to 'play ball'. Gradually, as this terrible disease took over his mind, Dad lost his capabilities - everything from walking, to speaking, to smiling and blinking.

ALZHEIMER'S

Alison used to think that only elderly people got Alzheimer's, a form of dementia. It seemed that, somehow, that was just part of getting old! Dementia is not a natural part of ageing - it is caused by diseases of the brain that rob people of their lives.

Alison's Nanna has now been diagnosed with Alzheimer's in her mid 80's, and it hits home that even for an elderly person it is awful to suffer from dementia. This person whom you love and admire, who was always intelligent, articulate, witty and strong, is gradually stolen from you and from themselves.

Can you imagine what it would be like if this happened to your parent, your partner, your sibling or even your child?

THE STATISTICS......

Dementia is one of the main causes of disability in later life, ahead of cancer, cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Over 820,000 people have dementia in the UK, this figure will rise to over 1 million by 2025.

FUNDRAISING TARGET !!

Ray & Alison have paid for the trek and their equipment themselves. Therefore, it's 'All For Alzheimer's'... EVERY penny raised will go to the Alzheimer's Society or Alzheimer's Research Trust.

£5,000 could support a researcher for 1 year with the chemicals & equipment they need to further understand the causes of dementia, so that better treatments can be developed & a search for a cure can be continued.

Every penny counts though and this is how the Society could use funds raised:-

£104 allows callers anywhere in the UK to call the Alzheimer's Society Dementia Helpline each week at their local rate

£530 could fund 10 to undertake the Society's dementia training programme

£1,250 pays to run Talking Point for 1 month. This is the Society's 24/7 online community for people with dementia, their carers, family and friends

£2,000 could support over 10,000 families with vital advice on how to talk to children about dementia with the society's award winning 'Talking to children about your illness' booklet

PLEASE HELP THEM MAKE THE FUTURE BRIGHTER!
