My story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On 14th February 2011, Eve was a healthy, fit and active 8 year old girl with a fun filled life and everything going for her. This was until she collapsed suddenly on that day and was rushed by ambulance to the Wansbeck Hospital. After tests were carried out she was then transferred urgently to the Great North Children's Hospital at RVI, Newcastle. Eve was diagnosed as having suffered from a massive brain haemorrhage and was given life saving surgery at the RVI. The consultants and surgeons stated that it was 50/50 as to whether Eve would survive and we later found out that they didn't expect her to last beyond 4 days.
Eve fought hard and survived 2 weeks in intensive care before being transferred to a rehabilitation ward. Eve could no longer move, talk, communicate or do anything of the things she had done prior to her collapsing. A few months down the line, Eve was given an MRI scan on her brain and it was found that she was suffering from a brain tumour. A little while after that, the doctors carried out a biopsy of the tumour and unfortunately, this caused a further bleed. We were told that they were unable to operate on the tumour due to its position on the brain stem. Instead, Eve received an intensive 6 week course of radiotherapy. All of this has left Eve in a completely disabled state and she requires 24/7 care in every way. She still cannot move or talk and can very inconsistently communicate by blinking. We have been told that Eve now suffers from a form of locked in syndrome whereby she is cognitively intact and understands everything that is going on, however on the outside she cannot offer any movement at all.
Eve is now 10 years old and has defied all odds by still being with us and continues to fight very very hard. She constantly receives physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy amongst other treatments. Eve is an inspiration to all her friends and family and whoever comes into contact with her.
We have had to move house and we have many adaptations such as a through floor lift, 2 ceiling track hoists and wheelchair access. Eve's sister, Mia aged 8 and brother Jed, aged 3 have been a wonderful strength to us as they have taken everything that has happened in their stride and are a great help with feeding Eve, hoisting her, pushing her wheelchair and changing her.
At present, Eve has a poor quality of life and however hard we try, it never seems like she has much to look forward to on a day to day basis. We are looking to raise funds so that we can offer Eve some enjoyment, some comfort and the chance to improve her health and well being. With disabled children, all equipment and products available are so expensive for a family like ours with very limited amounts of money to spend. Any kind of help to be able to buy Eve something to make her life worth living would mean the world to us.
