South Africa is a melting pot of diversity, culture and language: it truly is the most wonderful ‘rainbow nation’ and beneath the surface lies a generation hungry for change. We believe that Jesus, through the local church is the hope for South Africa and that the Alpha course has a key role to play in the coming years to see this nation be changed!
Since 1993, more than 400,000 people have attended Alpha courses across the country. It is run in 800 churches, schools, workplaces and prisons. Over 16,000 men and women have done the course in 40 Correctional Centres in South Africa. The South African government have found that the majority of these people are less likely to return to prison as re-offenders and have subsequently asked Alpha South Africa to run Alpha in every prison in South Africa.
There is an open door of opportunity and we long to see every person given the opportunity to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ on an Alpha course near to where they live, work or study. With this vision in our hearts, 2010 promises to be an amazing year in Alpha and some of the highlights including:
- A city-wide Alpha invitation in Cape Town with around 200 churches running Alpha at the same time;
- Preparation for the filming and production of the South African edition of the Alpha course DVD with a local speaker with the intention of reaching the masses in SA and indeed Africa;
- Over 500 couples going on the Marriage Course; and
- Over 1,000 Prisoners hearing the Good News of Jesus Christ on an Alpha course in their prison.
To achieve this and more, over ZAR 4,2million (about £ 350K) needs to be raised and we’d like to invite you to partner with us by giving £10 a month (£120 a year) or more. With £10 Alpha South Africa can train one Alpha course leader, administrator or prisons team member. Or they can give one person the opportunity to hear the Gospel message on an Alpha course or pay for a couple to complete a full Marriage Course.
