On 3rd July after a swim in the Atlantic I set out from Hendaye,  near Biarritz to walk the 500 miles over the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean sea and 44 days later enjoyed a hard earned swim at Banylus sur Mer.   I found it a humbling experience to camp at heights of over 7,000' surrounded by majestic mountains rising to 9,000' all around me.   The scenery was awesome and I felt privileged not just to have the opportunity to take time out to do the trek,  but to enjoy the good health allowing me to take on such a challenge.  I got  lost a good few times,  which was very annoying,   but managed to keep more or less on schedule.   The weather varied from low mists and rain in the Basque country to wild electric storms and  searing heat  as I aproached the Mediterranean.  My mountain tent served me well in the remote areas,  but I also stayed in shepherds' cabanes and  mountain refuges.   The long descents carrying a heavy pack over difficult terrain took their toll on my knees and ankles but with rest they are now recovering.

As planned I met up with my companion John Meldrum,  who was a great support  in  the more remote middle section and with my wife who I was delighted to have accompany me for the last few days.   Occasionally I met others on the trail,  who became firm friends.

I was touched on my return to find that I had raised £1074 for Cancer Research,  my nominated charity and hope thar this will increase over the coming winter months when I hope to give talks about my experience to interested groups looking for a speaker.

Thank you to all who sponsored me.
