Dear Friends,
I have decided to run a marathon! I hear you all laughing I know I've never run anywhere before but I've booked onto a "learn to run" course so everything will be fine (I hope)...
It's not a full marathon (baby steps!), but its still pretty scary. Its the City to Surf here in Sydney. Its 14kms which is a veeeeeeery long way for someone that has never run before. And right at the end I have to contend with "Heartbreak Hill". For those of you back home in England its called "Heartbreak Hill" for a very good reason and it has nothing to do with relationships! Its the last part of the course and its without a doubt the hardest part :-( If I finish this will be a MASSIVE accomplishment for me!
So why am I doing this and why do I need your support? Well you may remember that in October 2006 I traveled to Soroti, Uganda (Africa) with my parents to set up a drop in centre for the orphans and street children. My Mum had been two years running and her tales of devastation, poverty and child fatalities were the driving force behind me wanting to do something to help.
The statistics speak for themselves:
-
50% of all children in are malnourished
-
40 children are born each day with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS
-
Almost 2 million children die each year before reaching their first birthday
-
140 out of every 1000 children will not reach 5 years old
-
88 out of every 1000 will not make it to 1 year old
"Amuno" means hope in the local dialect and the charity we set up is called the "Amuno Childrens Trust". It provides food, clothing, emotional and medical support (something that is very rare without our help).
The charity has been supported financially by a very small group of people and it is now desperately in need of help and and we are all fearful of failure.....
So please please please will you sponsor me to run the City to Surf. Your kind donations will go a long way to providing essential fundamentals that we all take for granted.
And Just Giving have made it so easy to donate. Having a wonderful group of worldwide jetsetter friends Just Giving converts from your local currency using www.xe.com.
Thank you so very much for your very kind support.
Sarah xx
