Nepal Leprosy Trust
NLT is a Christian organization that provides medical and rehabilitation services to people affected by leprosy in Nepal. NLT also works with poor rural communities in development and poverty alleviation. Lalgadh Hospital (GoogleEarth 26d59m27sN, 85d55mE) is a project of NLT and has treated over 20,000 cases of leprosy to date.

| My personal message: |
I'm running the London Marathon this April to raise money for
the Nepal Leprosy Trust.
Leprosy is entirely treatable with a course of drugs which are provided by the World Health Organisation. However, this charity plays the vital role in organising clinics to diagnose the disease and hand out the drugs for it. Leprosy can cause a loss of sensation in the extremities so that patients may not notice small injuries which then become infected and ulcerated. The charity also carries out social awareness programmes so that more people are quickly diagnosed without fear of being stigmatised and abandoned by their families and communities. Nepal is a very rural area and the poor infrastructure makes it difficult to reach the communities most at risk. The money I raise will be used to facilitate diagnosis and treatment clinics, by providing (several?) off-road mopeds (about £900 in Nepal) to allow doctors and health workers to reach a far wider area and regularly reach people for clinics in regions with no roads, let alone public or private transport facilities.
I worked at their hospital in Southern Nepal four years ago and am very keen to raise money to help it carry out its important work, which relies entirely on donations. Money goes a long way in Nepal, and will be spent wisely by the trust, so your donations will definitely make a difference, however big or small.
