Story
Two years ago my wife Gemma Quew passed away after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest, the same thing that happened several months later to the Bolton footballer Fabrice Muamba. She had never suffered with any heart problems previously and there was no history of heart problems in her familly. After her death i was put in contact with the charity CRY, who specialise in helping families cope after the sudden death of someone who has died from a sudden cardiac arrest, as well screening surviving members of the familly involved.
Last year along with my friend Martin Baldwin, we took part in a skydive to raise awareness of the condition and the charity CRY. Initially we were going to give the money raised directly to the charity, but after being contacted by Tina Maretic whos daughter Francesca had a condition that can lead to a sudden cardiac arrest but survived as it was detected at the time. We thought best to let island people see where the money was going by attempting to bring a screening unit over for the day.
We have so far raised £2,650 fo the charity having set up a memorial fun in my late wifes name. We need to reach the target of £8,500 to successfully bring this to the island.
As you can imagine it has been a very difficult time for both Gemma's familly and myself and our daughter who was only two and half years old at the time. But i think this is a very worthwhile thing to do to raise awareness of the condition as well as hopefully preventing other young island famillies going through the same pain i have and continue too.
In July we will be taking part in the seven bridges walk which takes place in London. Where everyone involved is walking on behalf of someone they have lost.
So please give what you can!
