I have just run the 2009 London Marathon, my first marathon and at the age of 52 a real challenge.  I achieved a time of 4hrs 14mins 41secs.

This was the hardest thing I have ever done.

I am proud to have pushed myself so far to finish and more importantly support the Meningitis Research Foundation who's work supporting scientific research is vital if we are to defeat this terrible disease.

Until the early hours of Friday 7 December 2007 Hannah King, a life-long friend of my daughter Hannah, had been a healthy, beautiful, talented, fun-loving, uniquely stylish 16 year old, with a bright future ahead of her in the medical profession. Shortly after 5.00 am that morning she walked to the ambulance which rushed her to hospital with suspected meningitis. She died five hours later.

Thinking of the reason I was running the marathon was the single thing that kept me focused on finishing.  I was like a dog with a bone... I was not going to let go and end defeated by the distance.

So now... It's time for you to do your bit and support the 'Hannah Katie King' fund in aid of the Meningitis Research Foundation.
