ASF is making community and international development issues, in particular those impacting on disadvantaged and vulnerable people, integral to the practice and teaching of architecture. Our motivation for establishing ASF stems from an ambition to make architectural practice more relevant to the majority of the world’s population who are living in marginalised or poverty situations (both in the UK and worldwide). At architecture school students are taught to provide solutions to complex issues, however, often people in communities benefit more from being involved in the process of development than by being disempowered recipients of more often inappropriate solutions. It was these frustrations that lead a small team of dedicated volunteers to create ASF and in doing so establish an organisation that supports architectural education by teaching (and working with) the essential participatory tools and techniques required when working as a professional in community or international development projects.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit ourJustGiving page. Ben and I are raising money on behalf of Architecture Sans Frontiéres - UK (ASF-UK)

It is a charity that we have been involved with for the last couple of years, and it plays an important role in educating architects to empower people to shape their own environments. Enthusiasm alone is not enough to run an organisation, and so any sponsorship, however small, will make a huge difference in ensuring this great charity keeps tooling up groups and individuals with ways of bettering the built environment for our future.

To find out more about what we do please visit, www.asf-uk.org

The story began at the start of August by taking on the challenge of a 1000mile cycle from Lands End to John 'O Groats (LE-JOG) - which was completed in a leg-busting 9 days!...

I (Andy) had originally intended to run the Berlin marathon inSeptember 2011 but unfortunately the torn achilles I suffered from a fall during the cycle made this impossible...

I will now be focuisinf on recuperation of this and look to 2012 for a marathon distance when I'm back to fitness and the achilles has returned to full strength.

For information on the next stage and what race will be scheduled for 2012 watch this space... This will be confirmed by December at the latest.

The support we have already received for the cycle was quite overwhelming and we are massively grateful to everyone who donated so generously to help us smash our target of £500. I am now hoping we can claw our way to the £1000 mark by the end of September!

Many thanks, Andy and Ben
