Three Person English Channel Relay · 2 February 2009

KEEN is an organisation that provides weekly sporting and recreational activities for children and adults with special needs in Oxfordshire. We aim to provide fun and a sense of inclusion to people with all levels and types of disability, relying heavily on our wonderful volunteers to do so.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page and for considering sponsoring me to swim in a three person relay across the English Channel this summer. It is incredibly kind of you to consider donating money to KEEN by sponsoring me in this swim. KEEN do fantastic work for children with learning disabilities.  They regularly arrange activities and outings for the children, which allow then to run around, get some exercise and have lots of fun, and anything that you can spare would be very welcome.

The Solo Wannabees started their swim at 3am on Tuesday 14th July, with Kat Baker taking the first leg in the dark, followed by me, followed by Dom Pickett, all under the guidance of our wonderful pilot Paul Foreman and his crew.  We continued in this order, doing one hour rotations, giving us just two hours' of recovery time between swims.  Conditions were fairly calm at first with water temperatures around 16C/61F, however, about four hours in the sea became quite rough, and several people on the support boat were seasick.  The waves made moving forward a bit of a challenge and meant that when a swimmer tried to breath it was sometimes a lottery as to whether they would get a mouthfull of air or seawater.  We also ran into several jelly fish whilst swimming.  Each swimmer did four complete one hour swims.  Kat did a fifth one hour swim, and I then landed us in France 25 minutes into my fifth swim, giving us a total time of 13 hours and 25 minutes, covering a distance of just over 30 miles.  As we landed we were greeted by a crowd of French holiday makers who were so friendly and congratulated us on the swim.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: KEEN will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!
Many thanks for your generosity and support.

Andy.
