MapAction believes that applying geospatial expertise to humanitarian situations can greatly improve outcomes for the people affected. Global humanitarian needs outstrip resources. Expert geospatial and data analysis can help stretch those resources for maximum impact. Many professionals want to donate their energy and skills to help. MapAction is the bridge which enables them to do so effectively. We are a non-profit organisation that collaborates with partners around the world to help anticipate, prepare for and respond to humanitarian emergencies. We strive to ensure governments, regional and local disaster management agencies and humanitarian responders have access to the information and analysis that they need to make key decisions, at the right times, to save lives and alleviate suffering. We are a team of around 100 people, 75% of them expert volunteers, plus a small roster of standby consultants. Combining the passion of volunteerism with the rigour and reliability of professional standards, the ‘MapAction spirit’ is something we work hard to maintain and the willingness of our team to go the extra mile is often fed back to us.

Story

'under the sea' party, Take5 cellar Norwich, Saturday August 28th.

I'm leaving Norwich to do a primary teaching course in Exeter. Come and celebrate at an 'under the sea' fancy dress party. Be as creative as you can with your outfit, if I feel that you haven't put in enough effort then I may have to talk to your parents.

There will be a financial penalty on the night for those who don't turn up in fancy dress, and please don't worry you are unlikely to look sillier than me - but if you wish to try don't let me stop you.

Please give a 5 pound (or more!) donation to help me guage numbers, it goes entirely to the charity MapAction who send out mapping teams in disaster situations, as of yesterday (10th) they have a team on it's way to the Pakistan floods.

From their website : www.mapaction.org

'In a humanitarian crisis, relief agencies need rapid answers to questions about 'where'. Where are the greatest needs? Where are the gaps that need to be filled?MapAction works in disaster zones providing frequently updated situation maps showing where relief help is most urgently needed.'

Many thanks,

Andy
