This trek to Everest base camp is one of those things that I have always wanted to do but never had the time. Lucky for me a fantastic opportunity came up and I have taken the plunge and decided to go for it and at the same time raise some money for my chosen charity - MERLIN. It must be said that this trip would not be possible without the support of Ket my husband and my family as they will be looking after my babies while I am away so firstly a big thanks to them all for letting me folllow my dreams.

So what are you sponsoring me for? The trek is for 12 days and starts by flying into one the world's most dangerous airports Lukla! If I make it, then from there we will be under the guidance of an amazing team of Sherpas and they will take us to Everest Base Camp at 5,357m and back again as well giving us a guided tour and immersing us in the Nepalese way of life. I will be trekking for about 5-6 hrs each day and this is uphill mostly- ouch! We will be sleeping in the local teahouses along the way rather than outside in a tent. For a city girl like me this is going to be a big challenge especially for those who know I hate the cold, but I am looking forward to doing something different and leaving all my gadgets and home comforts behind and seeing if I can survive.

On the way to Base Camp we will be passing some of the most breathtaking scenery imaginable including several other Himalayan peaks other than Everest and I hope to do some photography on the way to show you all when I get back. If I have the energy I will try and go up Kala Patthar 5,545m a small mountain opposite Base Camp to watch the run rise over Everest!

I have chosen MERLIN (www.merlin.org.uk) as my charity because of the amazing work they do. They send medical experts to the frontline in global emergencies and set up essential life saving medical clinics in extremely difficult circumstances. They recruit local medical teams and work alongside them and train them up to be able to run the clinics after they have left. I first heard of them in my first job as a doctor. At that time my Consultant used to take time off work and go abroad and help them. On his return he would give us a talk and show us photos of what was going on. His work really inspired me and so I have decided to choose this charity and one day I would love to follow in his footsteps...but that's another dream for another day!
