Story

Thanks for visiting our fundraising page. We are in training for the Sheffield Marathon and we're hoping to raise loads of funds for SAFE@LAST which is a really great charity that works with children at risk through running away. SAFE@LAST provides a helpline, a missing persons scheme and a safe house for those children most at risk.

SAFE@LAST relies on fundraising events and donations for the majoroty of its income - it is really essential to keep these services available to children in South Yorkshire - here is one boy's story

Ben is 12. He rang the SAFE@LAST Helpline 5 days after being thrown out of home by his dad because he had stolen some money. He had slept in a field for two nights but was very tired as he had not been able to sleep much, then some young men were playing football in the field and he had gone home with one of them.

Neither Ben nor the ‘new friend’ would give any contact details at all but Ben did want to continue to talk on the phone. He listened to the volunteer’s advice about the dangers of putting all your trust in a new ‘friend’ and how vulnerable he was making himself. They discussed different solutions and then, suddenly, without leaving any contact details, Ben said he had to go and put the phone down.

The police confirmed fears that Ben’s father had not reported him as missing and therefore no-one was looking for him. There were no means of finding him unless he called the helpline again.

Two days later Ben did ring again – after talking to SAFE@LAST he had gone home to his Dad; they had talked and he felt that things should get better. He just wanted to say thanks to the volunteer who had talked to him on the Helpline and encouraged him to go home and stay safe.
