Frensham Pond Sailability provides disabled people of all ages the opportunity to experience the thrill of sailing. Sailing ranges from therapeutic cruising around Frensham Pond to competitive racing in Paralympic class mini-keelboats both at Frensham and at other locations in the UK & Europe.

Story

Please note that although the blurb on the left says that my charity is Frensham Pond Sailability it is actually the Farnham & District Sports Association For The Disabled, of which the sailing is just one part.  The group also provide social events, swimming, theatre trips and days out for the permanently and temporarily disabled in the Farnham area. The group is funded by voluntary contributions and is dependent on voluntary helpers.

Events                                                                                                                                                                              Turbo X, Surrey Hills - Distance 10 miles (31st May)

The Turbo X series of fell runs are a touch different from normal runs in that they are 10-or-so miles of hills and bogs. Starting and finishing in the middle of Swinley Forest and running up to the highest point for miles around on the Surrey Hill’s.  I’m told that the mud will be knee deep in places and some of the hills are so steep that you have to scramble up them on all fours.

Bontrager Twentyfour12 - 24 hours (25th-26th July)

Bontrager Twentyfour12 is one of the biggest endurance Mountain Bike Races in the British biking calendar.  The race starts at midday on Saturday the 25th of July, continuing onto Midday on Sunday and takes place around an entirely off road course of approximately 12-14km. I’ll be taking competing as part of a 4 man team, taking it in turns to do laps of the course and know doubt enjoying the odd beer at the end.

The Great North Swim - 1 mile (13th September)

The Great North Swim is a one mile open water swim taking place in Lake Windermere in the Lake District.  This event is only in its second year, however in its first year it attracted Olympic, Commonwealth and World Championship medallists.

XXT Triathlon - 1,500m Swim, 25km Bike, 10km Run (26th September)

Having taken part in a couple of “sprint” distance XXT triathlon’s over the last few years I feel that it is about time that I stepped it up a notch and did a full distance event.  The main difference between a traditional triathlon and the XXT is that both the bike and the run are over challenging off-road terrain rather than the tarmac roads and paths used in a normal event.  The swim is in a lake which is also technically more challenging than swimming in a pool.  I estimate that it will take around 3 hours to complete all three disciplines.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: if you’re a taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
