Story
Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world with over 60 per cent of the population living on less than one dollar a day.
The cycle of descent based slavery, which effects over 10 per cent of the population means that former slaves and slave descendants are the most marginalised and excluded people in this already poor country.
By addressing the educational, health and economic needs of former slaves,
Anti-Slavery International and its partner Timidria are helping to build a community where they can become part of Niger's wider society.
The schools provide primary education and basic health care for children attending school for the first time in their lives. School welfare officers also work with parents and encourage them to send their girl children to school. Sadly girls are disproportionately left out of the education system.
