Story
If you know us, you will probably know that running is... well... not exactly our strong point! So, as a good excuse for us to learn HOW to run, and to raise money for a very worthy cause in memory of two good friends, we've decided (perhaps ill-advisedly!) to set a goal of running 5k. Now, we may not be able to run the whole way, but we'll give it a good go!
Why?
Although neither of us have suffered from cancer ourselves, we have seen the affect it has had on our family and friends. We lost both our grandmothers - one to liver cancer, one to myeloma - and our uncle was diagnosed with breast cancer last year (thanks to an early diagnosis, now needing no further treatment).
It's easy for the media to talk about "cancer sufferers". It's easy for us, as healthy people, to talk about why WE think raising money is important. It's harder to ask the people who aren't there anymore. Two of Sophie's university friends fall into that category.
On 14 February 2011, Oli Simcoe-Shelton lost an 18-month long battle with lung cancer. On 7 June 2013, Amy Davenport lost her own struggle. In Amy's case, Cancer Research UK funded developments in melanoma treatment meant she could continue on as normal for a little while longer. We need more of those developments!
Events like Race for Life are vital in funding Cancer Research UK's life-saving work into preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer. By sponsoring us, we can unite and create a force that cancer can't ignore.
Gift Aid it!
If you're a UK taxpayer, please remember to tick the Gift Aid box as this will increase your donation by at least 25% at no cost to you.
One day we will beat cancer. Help us make it sooner.
