Our charity cares for adults in Ayrshire and Arran with life-limiting illnesses. We help them live as actively as possible to the end of their lives, however long that may be. Hospice care is open to all. It’s free for patients but it’s not free to provide. So we need to raise over £4M each year.

Arran Golf Ultramarathon

I wanted to combine a physical pursuit with some golf thrown in, and somehow have ended up designing a challenge which involves me running and hacking my way around Arran. For the record, I dislike running and my golf is getting progressively worse, so I perhaps could've chosen a more suitable challenge.

I will play each of Arran's 7 golf courses (93 holes) and, after each round, run to the next course before picking up the clubs and teeing off again. This will culminate in around 40 miles running and 13.5 miles golfing...providing I hit it straight (which I don't). This should see an overall distance of, approximately, 55 miles covered (#GoingFor55). The hope is to complete this within 36 hours (with a few hours sleep thrown in).

No medals, trophies or certificates at the end, just a warm glow knowing that friends and family parted with some of their hard earned cash to put to an amazing cause...ALL proceeds will go to Ayrshire Hospice, who rely on community fundraising to raise a required £4 million per year.

Elizabeth McLean
My Mum's second battle with breast cancer began a few years ago, a challenge she faced head on without any sign of fear or complaints. Even during lengthy spells of treatment, she always put others first and this selflessness epitomised her personality.

Towards the end, and despite our best efforts to prepare her to pass at home, it was clear she required a greater level of care to ensure her final weeks were as comfortable as possible. This was offered by the Ayrshire Hospice and was the best thing that could've happened in those final few weeks.

They offered expert care for both my Mum and the rest of the family, recognising family members go through a difficult time also. It was purely through the care on offer at the Hospice that we were able to spend some extended, quality time with her (including a special 10 weeks with her new Grandson, Alexander, my son born on 22nd August 2018) and enable us to be with her at her side when she passed on 9th November 2018.
