Story
Hello and thankyou for visiting this site,
On Saturday 22nd August 2009 Jayne Wallace, Dave Mathew, Brian and Thomas Davis are tackling:
The Abyss Triple Whammy challenge
This involves a zip wire jump, followed by a free abseil (into thin air rather than against a building or mountainside) and finishing with a powerfan descent.
We are taking this challenge to promote awareness of ataxia and to raise much needed funds for Ataxia - the ’s leading support and research charity for people with ataxia, their families and carers.
Very few people will have heard about ataxia so please read on:
'Ataxia' means ‘absence of order’. People with ataxia have problems of co-ordination because parts of the nervous system that normally control co-ordination and balance are affected.
Ataxia is the principal symptom of a group of neurological disorders called the cerebellar ataxias. Most are which progressive.
This rare neurological disorder affects only about 10,000 adults in the including Jayne, Dave and Brian and an unknown number of children and young people, although there are different types of ataxia one thing is common - there is currently NO CURE or effective treatment.
Ataxia affects co-ordination, balance, gait and speech - people with ataxia are often mistaken for being drunk which is embarrassing and awkward but more seriously can lead to people with ataxia being stigmatised or discriminated against.
Ataxia is also degenerative and although rates of progression do vary between individuals, as the ataxia progresses in addition to the problems already mentioned there may be problems with vision, hearing and swallowing. Some people can also lose the ability to walk and do other ‘normal’ activities, sometimes leading to total physical dependency. Symptoms can begin at different ages for different types of ataxia and also varies between individuals – age is no barrier some people are diagnosed in childhood, others later in life. Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Ataxia gets your money faster and, if you’re a taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation. So please sponsor us and help Ataxia every penny raised will be very much appreciated. Many thanks Jayne, Dave, Brian and Thomas
