ATLAS MOUNTAIN EXPEDITION
We returned safely and all in one piece from our amazing adventure on Saturday 23rd Feb. tired but exhilarated. We trekked for 4 days, covering roughly 15k a day, through the the most amazing scenery, staying overnight in small Berber villages. We took the opportunity to visit two schools and presented them with gifts of colouring pencils and books.
On the 5th day we reached the base camp of Toubkal at 3207m. Other groups had been waiting 4 days for the weather to break to try to tackle the summit. Overnight the weather really turned against us and 80cms of snow fell on the mountain. Our Guide and Instructor said it was too dangerous for us to attempt the summit, so we had to return.
I am very proud of the cadets as they all showed great spirit in tackling what was for some of them a whole new experience. I hope it will act as a catalyst for some of them to go on to explore the wild, unspoilt places left in the world.
As for me, it was tough! Very tough! Having had a chest infection in the weeks prior to going, I found breathing in the thinner air slowed me down. However, I did get to 3200m which is the highest that I have ever been, so I feel quite proud of myself!
It was a big surprise to be met at the airport by my lovely daughter, Sarah, so I was able to introduce her to the cadets who are all getting themselves sponsored individually for MS. We hope to be able to give a substantial donation to the MS Society when all the money is collected in.
A big thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far.
The fund raising page will remain open until April.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: MS Society will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
So please sponsor me now if you haven't done so already!!
