Die-hard Manchester City fans Brian Leigh and Marion Cadwallader, and United devotee Des O’Brien are stepping over to the dark side and pulling on ‘that’ shirt will take more than just a sharp intake of breath all in the name of Children in Need.   Brian, a senior lecturer in Accounting and Finance, has been a City fan through thick and thin – well mainly thin – for more than four decades and has raised his two sons to mirror his own hatred of all things red – so much so that neither will wear anything in the colour, or patronise any of the club’s sponsors.   Explained Prestwich Blue, Brian: “I didn’t force them into supporting City, but they knew what was right from an early age. One of my sons did go along to a junior school training day at United when he was eight, much against my advice, and then broke his finger playing in goal there, so he learnt early on the hard way that only pain and misery can come from Old Trafford.”   Meanwhile Accounting and Finance assistant administrator Marion, from Didsbury, is going to have to put 35 years of City loving, United hating, devotion behind her and steal herself to wear the emblem of her foes for the first – and definitely last - time.   Marion became a Blues devotee after meeting husband Tony, who is from a long line of City fans including his dad and eight uncles, who were all Maine Road season ticket holders.   Thinking about that United shirt is bringing Marion out in a cold sweat, and she confided: “I’d rather stick needles in my eyes than put it on, but for a good cause like Children in Need I’ll do it for just one day. – a working day, from 8.45am to  4.30pm and no longer!”   The swap will be no picnic for House Foreman Des O’Brien either. He has always enjoyed pouring scorn on United’s increasingly noisy neighbours, and explained: “I grew up in Moss Side not a stone’s throw from Maine Road, but went to watch City one week and United the next and soon saw the light.   “ I have to wear a blue shirt as part of my uniform, and it kills me, but I’ve loved giving Brian and Marion plenty of stick over the years, and long may it continue!” Brian, Des and Marion, pictured, are hoping to raise a bumper sum for Children in Need through their personal humiliation once £200 has been raised they will be pictured wearing the opposition’s shirts.
