Story

A long time ago in a Dublin not so far away there was a young boy. He knew he was different to the other boys, sport was certainly not for him. In fact vigorous exercise was essentially a foreign language to this young chap. Time went on and so this remained. He waxed lyrical on the weirdness of runners. How they could possibly enjoy this event was beyond him? "I don't even run for a bus!" he proclaimed loudly.

But as time went on, he realised he needed to do something lest he start to look like the before photograph. It was around this time he started running, more like a brief jog followed by a saunter. But these runs slowly added up and after a while he pulled a 55 minute 10k race out of the bag. Its not so bad this running lark he thought, and pondered further on his looming 30th.

A marathon had always been on his long list of things to do before that date, alas time was not on his side. After the 10k there was only 4 short weeks until that anniversary and with the best will in the world 26.6 miles was not going to be achievable. So he hunted out an alternative and Macmillan came to his rescue with a place in the Brighton Marathon 2011.

You see life had not always been easy for this young man. A mixture of cancers and illnesses had greedily stolen more than the odd member of his family from him at varying ages. Most notably his mother. Now in his 30th year it was time to do something to redress the balance.

Lucky in many other ways, most notable a loving and supportive family, Bainser, realised not everyone had it so good. When one of his nearest and dearest fell ill, there were always plenty of the clan to rally round. No matter the time of day or distance in geography someone was there. Helping those who needed it to get on with the hectic job of getting better. Macmillan may not be family but for many many others they help bridge those gaps in time, geography and finance. Bainser knew he could check an item off the bucket list and do some good as well.

So here he is, with a guaranteed place in the Brighton Marathon 2011.  He's got just a few short months to raise £1000, get the miles in, and help get and give a little back. Thing is he needs your help. He can't do it alone, so while he's pounding the pavements if you could dig deep into your pockets and share both the love and some pounds, it would be a great help.

Together both he and you can help people get on with the full time job of getting better. Please give generously, and he promises he'll stop speaking in the third person.
