In September 2011, I am participating in a trek to visit and raise badly-needed funds for four projects in South Africa's Eastern Cape: The four projects I will visit are: Vukani Old Age Centre was opened in 1996 in an endeavour ‘to combat poverty, malnutrition and loneliness among the aged’. Bethany Place of Safety looks after 60 young children. The objective is to have all children fostered or adopted. Blythswood Institution is a secondary school founded in 1877. ACTSA has given regular support and recently there has been a major upgrade of the buildings by the Provincial Government. Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre was established in1996 to offer counselling and support to women who are victims of rape and domestic violence. It now has an outreach and support programme across the Eastern Cape. More information at www.masimanyane.org.sa In particular, I want to understand the challenges they face and the legacy of apartheid.
