What was the crossing of Morecambe Bay like?
Thirteen members of the Oakley Holidays were part of a larger group of around 400 walkers led by the Queen's guide to the Bay Mr. Cedric Robinson. Many were raising momey for their favourite charities.
Our group consisted of Laura and Ed Bury, Megan Foy, Imogen Lambourn, Gabi, Ollie and Alex Clark, Moira Quinn, Edward Nussey, Frances Kelly, Lianne Fox, Richard Flower and Julian Wilde plus a variety of distinguished mums and dads.
We set off from Arnside in warm and sunny weather and, after half an hour along a coastal path, prepared to cross the sands, most of us without shoes. We liked the style of the walk - relaxed and leisurely with plenty of opportunity for conversation.
The best bit was wading through the channels where Richard and Megan engaged in disgraceful splashing of everyone else. The ridges on the sands gave our foot muscles a good work out!
After three hours and around seven miles we were glad to reach the finish at Kent's Bank station where we got certificates and had a picnic on the station platform, much to the amusement of a passing train driver.
We travelled back by train to Arnside where the Durham families said goodbye at the end of a very worthwhile day, as they were collecting their cars whilst the Lytham group continued to Preston by train. A good time was had by all !
We had been aiming to raise £750, principally for the Street Academy in Accra, Ghana where one of our friends, Tom Cousins, worked last year and for a boat-building project to help fishermen in Sri Lanka who lost everything in the tsunami disaster. We were pleased hand over a cheque to Tom at the Oakley Holiday at the end of July.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Oakley Holidays will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you through the Gift Aid scheme
