The Friends of Cynthia Spencer Hospice was founded in 1990 and its aim is to raise funds so that additional medical equipment, facilities and patient treats can be provided for patients at the Cynthia Spencer Hospice. Friends have funded numerous projects including a fully furnished conservatory within the hospice grounds and paying for much needed staff at the hospice. The charity's costs are minimal and therefore the majority of funds raised are spent on patient care.
Talking With Hands provide hearing interpreters to sign films in British Sign Language with subtitles, creating equal access to the cinema for the hard of hearing. They forge excellent working relationships with the cinema and film distribution world, and the strengthening of these ties has a major ripple effect, enabling people to see deafness in a positive way. In 2005, Talking With Hands received the Queen’s Award, which recognises excellence in community activities.
