We work with local communities in Uganda to improve education and quality of life.

Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

This summer I will be spending two months in Uganda working for an organisation called Soft Power Education.  I'm lucky enough to be able to fund this trip myself, but would like to raise some extra money for the charity through sponsorship.  If you would like to find out more, please read on.

Soft Power Education (SPE) is a British registered charity and Ugandan NGO working with communities in Uganda to improve quality of life through education. They focus on four interrelated areas:

1.  Refurbishment of Primary Schools
Established in 1999, SPE has been supporting the Ugandan Government in working towards its Millennium Development Goals for the primary education sector. The work began after Uganda introduced universal primary education in 1997 causing net enrolment in primary schools to rise from 2.3 million to 7.5 million in just over 2 years (UNICEF). This created dire circumstances for learning within already limited schools. Having refurbished 34 schools to date, SPE is working to provide a clean, safe and inspiring environment for learning.

2. Education Centres
Working with these schools, SPE has created a complementary learning environment based at the Amagezi Education Centre.  It provides the opportunity for children to attend sessions in agriculture, science, art, drama and ICT, in a unique environment offering practical and interactive learning.

3. Community Development Programme
SPE has now extended the use of the centre to enable opportunities for adult learning. They are enabling more people in the community to benefit from the resources available, as well as to learn relevant skills to aid income generation from sales of local products and produce to visiting tourists and tourist-related businesses.

4. Partnerships
In partnership with the Ugandan Wildlife Authority, SPE is now bringing conservation to the classroom in geographical areas of specific environmental threat. They are refurbishing schools in these areas, establishing conservation education centres and providing local children with their own opportunity to enjoy the uniqueness of the area on overnight safaris. They are currently looking for new ways to work in partnership with communities to establish sustainable opportunities through education.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Soft Power Education gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor me now!

Thanks a million,
Bekka
