Two Oceans Half Marathon · 3 April 2010

In remote rural areas of Africa and Asia, access to a decent education is the key to a better future. Our funds aim to improve the infrastructure to equip rural children to break out of the cycle of poverty. We build and refurbish classrooms, washrooms, water tanks and libraries. Help us build more!

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I was introduced to this charity by a work colleague, and I am very happy to be able to run for such a worthy cause. The AV Foundation's main aim is to target their fund raising on one main project each year in each of the ten countries where AV sends volunteers.

One of the countries supported by this charity is South Africa, where AV sends teaching volunteers to the delightful small town of Philippolis, south west of Bloemfontein. The person who first got AV there and oversees the AV volunteers is an inspirational person called Kate Groch. She also arranges for students from various South African and overseas schools to spend short periods in the community.

A much bigger focus of Kate in the community has been to get involved in various building projects. Kate is now embarking on building a complete new nursery school in a different part of the town. This new nursery in the township of Poring tse Rolo near Philippolis is where any funds raised will be directed. The AV Foundation is hoping to raise sufficient to make a significant contribution to this project.

This is an extract from Kate's note, specifically describing the new project:

"A New Challenge

Over the last year or so there has been a mushrooming of families arriving in from the farms –they are settling in a new area of Poding tse Rolo *( the traditionally Black Township). These are families who often have lost eth breadwinner or have a sick breadwinner – that is what motivates the move of the whole family. It is extremely poor and in crisis. We are fortunate that the government has replaced the shacks that sprung up with low cost housing so people have a place to stay. We are providing nutrition and clothing into the space as much as we can as are other NGO’s in Philippolis (the VVA and NG Kerk...)

The influx of people has been so many that it now become necessary to build another crèche/nursery school. So it has become necessary for us to repeat what we have done in Bergmanshoogte. So we begin again.

We have decided to start the project with a hall as in our Adult/Homework centre. A “classroom” that can be the answer to a variety of functions and needs. But is a crèche in the Day. And then see what the needs are from there. As an alternative we are also looking at the already existing nursery school and the possibility of adding this “classroom” to them with another 2 teachers?  But the language of the learners is different; Afrikaans as opposed to Sotho and Xhosa. Either way the building will need to be built.

Looking at what has been spent on the other building we are looking at raising up to R150 000.00 so anything towards that would be  a great help.

We would really appreciate your assistance in helping us to complete this project so our vision of changing the futures of these children.

Kind regards

Kate Groch
