I can date my first involvement with the RNLI back to 2005; the RNLI dates back much further to 1824 and, since then, has saved over 137,000 lives.
Before embarking on my Atlantic crossing with James, undertaking the RNLI sea survival training that all the lifeboat crews go through, gave me a real understanding of some of the dangerous and unpredictable conditions that they have to face.
Having crossed the Atlantic and faced these conditions personally, I have even more respect for the fact that these lifeboat crews are volunteers, who take to the sea to save the lives of others.
2007 was another busy year for the RNLI with 7,834 people being rescued by RNLI lifeboat crews. RNLI lifeguards rescued a further 1,350 people during the summer and the RNLI Flood Rescue Team coming to the aid of another 200 in flood-hit areas across the UK.
