Marathon des Sables · 4 August 2008

Yorkshire is one of the regions hardest hit by cancer. Together, we can change this. Yorkshire Cancer Research is a charity dedicated to finding new cancer cures and treatments and bringing them to people in Yorkshire. Our aim is for more people to survive cancer, in Yorkshire and beyond.

Story

Friends, Family and Colleagues - I write to ask for your help one more time!

Dubbed ‘the toughest footrace on earth’, the gruelling Marathon des Sables is a six-day, 155 mile (250 km), ultra-marathon in the Moroccan Sahara. Competitors carry all of the food and personal belongings needed to last the entire event.

Sandstorms, snakes and scorpions are common. Water is rationed and temperatures often reach 120°F (48°C). The terrain is mostly rocky, uneven ground and 15-20% of the course covers massive sand dunes.

Yorkshire Cancer Research is the adult version of the childrens cancer charity (Candlelighters) that stepped in when I needed their help most back in 1979, aged 5. Dig deep my family, friends and colleagues, this is arguably the craziest thing I've ever done and knowing that you're supporting me on this arduous journey will carry me through the darkest moments of the race (and if you ask me nicely I'll send you a postcard!).

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Yorkshire Cancer Research gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

So please sponsor me now!
