A Rhino is being killed in South Africa every 10.5 hours

First let's start with the good news: despite the poaching crisis, during the last two years overall populations of both black and white rhino have increased. Recent population statistics compiled by the African Rhino Specialist Group show there are currently 5,055 black rhino and 20,405 white rhino in Africa.

Then, unfortunately we move onto the (very) bad news: these growth rates are incredibly low, with rhino poaching increasing by 43% between 2011 and 2012. In 2012, at least 745 rhinos were poached in Africa, the highest number in two decades. Experts predict that if poaching continues to increase at this rate, rhino populations could start to decline in less than two years' time. In 2013 so far, a further 227 rhinos have been killed in South Africa alone; that's one every 10.5 hours.

Anybody who tuned in to Sky News last Thursday would have seen the excellent story that they ran on the current poaching crisis, in South Africa ...
