Story
On the 13th October I will be running the Oxford Half Marathon for Asylum Welcome, a local charity who offer help for refugees, asylum seekers and immigration detainees. I am aiming to complete the 13.1 mile course in two hours, so have been training hard over the past few months and am now facing the final 10 weeks.
I have recieved a lot of moral support to achive this goal, but I am now also asking that people dig deep to support a cause that is close to my heart by sponsoring me for the race. Raising money for a charity I volunteer with will give me an extra push to train hard and run hard on race day, so please give what you can.
About Asylum Welcome:-
Asylum Welcome are a small but important charity, who help people who often have no where else to turn for support. They offer information and advice, services for destitute people, services for detainees, services for young people and, education and advice services. Alongside this, they also run campaigns and do advocacy work.
I have been a volunteer with Asylum Welcome since July 2012, working on the front desk and in the advice department. Volunteering with this organisation has taught me a lot about the difficulties that asylum seekers, refugees and immigration detanees face in this country. Asylum seekers are often a misunderstood group within society, but organisations such as Asylum Welcome work to show that they are just normal people, who have been forced to leave their homes due to a fear of what might happen if they stay. Asylum seekers recieve little goverment help whilst their appeals are being processed, so services such as the food bank at the AW office can really help out people who come in.
