Birmingham Focus on Blindness - Blind Drive · 4 May 2009 ·

Every day 29,000 people in Birmingham live with sight loss. We support people with visual impairments and other disabilities, together with their carers, to live fulfilling and independent lives by providing services that reflect their wants and needs.

Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page. One of Focus Birmingham's fundraising activities this year is a 'Blind Drive'. Anyone taking part will be given a blindfold and with instructions only from a BSM instructor sitting in the passenger seat, will have to drive round a track (at Birmingham Wheels Park in Saltley) twice and then perform some parking manoeuvres, all with no sight. Sounds like fun huh? That's what I thought and why I decided to join up. Why am I doing this crazy challenge? As most of you will know, I lost the sight in my right eye in an RTA in the Brazilian Jungle in 2005 and 60% of the sight in my left eye. As this was obviously distressing for me and difficult to adapt to in the beginning, I joined Focus Birmingham (then it was Birmingham Focus on Blindness)for support and advice. As it says to the left, Focus Birmingham enables those with visual impairments and other disabilities live a relatively normal life. This charity in particular has been a real support to me and many others and continues to be so; it is for this reason that I would like to raise as much as I can to help them carry out their work and make many more feel less alone, like they did for me. When I saw that this challenge was coming up, I jumped at the chance to get involved, mainly because I miss driving so much and would give anything to be able to drive again. However thankfully, this challenge doesn't require you to need vision. Just to put trust in the BSM instructor that will be sat beside me, giving me instructions. I'm hoping that I haven't forgotten how to drive. :-) They won't need to give me a full blindfold anyway, just an eyepatch... lol! Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It's also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Focus Birmingham gets your money faster and, if you're a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation. So please sponsor me... If there is anyone who is interested in coming along on the 4th of May to cheer me on, then please do. I will be starting my drive at 12 noon. If you need full address details and a map, please email Victoria at the following address... victoria@focusbirmingham.org.uk Thank you so much for reading this. Please sponsor me to make a fool of myself.... :-)
