Bewl Barrel Race · 18 September 2010

Hospice in the Weald provides compassionate, individualised, holistic and supportive care for all patients, and those important to them, in West Kent and East Sussex. As a local charity not part of the NHS we need to raise £10m each year to ensure our services can continue.

Story

Thanks for visiting the Bewl Barrel Race fundraising page.

The time is getting close for another Barrel Race!!!

The chosen charities for this event are The Hospice in the Weald and The RNLI. These charities have been chosen by the winning team of the November 2009 event.

The Hospice in the Weald is where a good friend and co organiser of the event spent his last days. He also nominated the RNLI as his chosen charity.

There are two races you can take part in, the 'Full Barrel' and the 'Empty Barrel'

The Full Barrel:
Each team has to carry a full barrel (weighing about 55kg) from the Greyhound pub, all the way round Bewl Reservoir and back to the pub (approx 13.5 miles).

The simple way to describe it is "a half marathon with a 55kg barrel of beer". But, instead of a medal if you win you get to drink 72 pints of a sponsored ale as you win a barrel of beer!

It is the toughest half marathon you will probably do and it is open to anyone. You can enter on your own (if you are Hercules) or as a team of as many as you like.

Race starts at 12 noon and will take between 3 and 5 hours to complete.

The Empty Barrel:
Each team has to carry an empty barrel (weighing about 5kg) from the Greyhound pub to the visitors centre and back to the pub (approx 5 miles).

Race starts at 12.30pm and will take about an hour to complete.

The Rules
No wheeled or motorized transport may be used. Teams so far have been using a stretcher or a step ladder, as this allows four or more people around the barrel at once, therefore sharing the load.

The Spectators:
We will be putting on various forms of entertainment for those doing the difficult task of supporting. Amongst these, there is a bar serving refreshments all day and a BBQ.

The After-Party:
After the race there will be plenty of beer, more food, lots of live music, and lots of banter. There will also be a prize giving and trophies. There will also be a raffle and an excellent auction of promises!

More teams than ever have already entered but we need more!!! If you are interested in forming your own team or joining another team for either event then please contact Lee Henderson for more details on 01892 785742.

For those of you not wanting to compete then come down and support - the more the merrier!
