Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On the 1st June myself and 9 other women will be heading to Tanzania to build 90 beehives from scratch in just 10 days.
The reason I am building beehives is that the forests of Tanzania are disappearing at a terrifying rate of about 1,500 football fields every day. Forest loss reduces the water supply for the local farmers, meaning that they struggle to grow enough food to feed their families. They often then cut down more trees for income which leads to a vicious circle.
Farm Africa is working with farmers in the Nou Forest to break this cycle and has bought together local communities and government to develop sustainable businesses that work in harmony with the forest which is where honey production comes in.
The Big Beehive Build is an opportunity to reach a new community in the area and leave behind the legacy of sustainable beekeeping businesses, so that individual farmers can provide for their families - forever! While beekeeping is traditional in the area, these modern hives that we will build means production can double in just one year.
The beehives we build will help kick-start the honey business for the local community, who will be train alongside us how to build the hives and how to look after the bees safely and harvest the honey. The extra income they earn from selling the honey will enable them to feed, clothe and educate their children.
