Story

Hi, and welcome to my JustGiving page for The Big Bike Adventure 2010!

Starting on 22nd May this year, my best friend, Si, and I will cycle 875 miles, including doing nearly 42,000ft of climbing, from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise money for 2 great charities: Sustrans, the charity for the development and promotion of sustainable transport, and the Cardiomyopathy Association (CMA).

This particular JustGiving page is only linked to the CMA, so everything you kindly donate here will go straight to the CMA, 100% of it. Please READ ON to find out more about why we're doing this ride.

In August 2008 my girlfriend's father suddenly and prematurely died of heart failure caused by this lesser-known condition, cardiomyopathy. Since this tragic event left such a big hole in our lives, I've come to learn a lot more about this condition. It is a hereditary condition, passed down through families, which suddenly and without warning can bring on heart seizures, often fatal, in people young or old, regardless of health.

The CMA work very hard to further research this condition, diagnose sufferers and support sufferers, or families who have lost loved ones to this condition. It can be diagnosed early in life, and easily treated in an on-going fashion allowing the sufferer to lead a healthy and normal life. By helping to detect it early, the work of the CMA can help people massively.

There are a huge number of very worthy charities out there, all deserving of our support. The CMA is the one that, through this sudden loss, has become very close to myself and my family. Riding a few (?!) miles to raise money to help them continue their work is a small contribution. So, please donate whatever you can afford to support us on this ride.

I'll be keeping you all updated in the coming months with tales of our training and preparations, and during the event itself you'll be able to follow our progress live from your PC. So you'll see all of the fun and games we get up to in the months ahead!

Thanks for taking the time to read this introduction, and for donating to this great cause. :-)
