On 6th July, Laura and Jane are abseiling down the Manchester Corn Exchange to raise money for the Birdhouse Fund.
Jane is not an adrenaline junky. In fact, she’s a little bit afraid of heights, just in the sense that every time she’s at the top of a high building she feels like any moment she’ll make a run for it and jump off. She wimped out of abseiling as a teenager when everyone else was queuing up for a chance to give it a try and can’t finish painting the downpipe on the side of her house because she’s too scared to go any higher up the ladder. Believing that the only events worth sponsoring are ones that cause the participant pain, and in a moment of “what the heck”, she’s chosen this as a challenge to herself. Here’s hoping the adrenaline that once got her up a ladder and in through the bedroom window when locked out on New Year's Day kicks in again and sees her through.
Laura on the other hand has a bit of a reputation for her adventures, but her infamy may have more to do with the way in which they don't always quite go as planned. If you haven't heard the story of the last time she was at the end of a rope, it involved a thunderstorm, crevasse rescue, hypothermia, a frozen river crossing, lots of bruises and a broken mobile phone. Having recently decided to say 'yes' to any challenge that comes her way, she is getting 'back in the saddle', hoping things will end slightly better this time.
The Birdhouse Fund is aimed at women over 16 years of age in Greater Manchester who are in need of a small amount of money to help them overcome an obstacle that keeps them from following their dreams, or simply make a better start in life. It might be to help make a new home after fleeing domestic violence, to embark on a training course to build a career, or even to set up a new group that will support other women moving forward.
