The London BNP Paribas Energy and Infrastructure Group has a long history of financing and advising on projects in the energy and infrastructure sectors, both here in the UK and across continental Europe. For 2011, as part of our team-building activities, we wanted to apply our financing skills and experience to raising funding for a great cause - the Helen & Douglas House Hospice.

Why Helen & Douglas House?

Helen House was the world’s first children’s hospice, founded in Oxford by Sister Frances Dominica nearly 30 years ago. Douglas House opened in 2004 and is still the only UK hospice specifically for teenagers and young adults aged 16 to 35.  

Both Houses pioneer the highest levels of specialist care, offering medically supported short breaks, emergency care and end-of-life care. The needs of the whole family are looked after, for as long as required, through counselling, practical support and bereavement care.

Why do we want to raise funding for Helen & Douglas House?

On Monday 27 June 2011, the London BNP Paribas Energy & Infrastructure team travelled to Oxfordto visit Helen & Douglas House and to meet the Fundraising Team. In the morning, the team listened to the compelling story of a mother who unfortunately had to use the hospice and the great comfort provided to her and her family there. We then toured the hospice and observed the truly seminal and compassionate work being done by the HDH staff. In the afternoon, we were divided into subgroups to identify, develop and then present fundraising proposals, with the end goal of agreeing a team fundraising strategy to raise a minimum of £50,000. This page is part of that effort combined with charity events that the team will soon run.     

It costs over £4.5 million a year to run the two Hospice houses. With no guaranteed government funding, Helen & Douglas House must raise 80% of this, £3.6 million, every year. If they fail, beds will close and terminally ill children, young adults and their families will lose their lifeline of support.

The Helen & Douglas House Fundraising Team focuses on generating short term income and developing long term relationships. The Team works with energy and commitment as a competitive business in a challenging market to achieve its targets. The Fundraisers believe passionately in their role and, having visited the Hospice and spent a day in their company,  we share their passion.
