Story
Hi, my name is Dave and in August 2006 I'm going to hop on a yellow longboard in Perth, Australia, and set off for Brisbane following a 5000 mile coastal route.
The journey, which I've nicknamed 'BoardFree', will be the final stage of one and a half year long campaign designed to raise awareness for three charities whose work lengthens, educates and enriches the lives of children throughout the world.
The Lowe Syndrome Trust is a small, family-run charity which works constantly to raise awareness about Lowe Syndrome and to fund research projects into the presently incurable disease.
Link Community Development's work in Sub-Saharan Africa has had an inspiring influence on my life and provides thousands of children with an improved education, giving many communities a central pivot that will last for many lifetimes.
Through the sport of sailing Sailability Australia educates the broader community to the needs and attitudes of people with disabilities; it dispels many fears held by both the disabled and able bodied. Everyone is accepted for their ability and disability disappears as groups work and learn together. There is a more in-depth description of each charity available on www.boardfree.co.uk. All money donated through this webpage will be equally shared out between the three charities. You can also support BoardFree by buying a t-shirt, wristband or mousemat, or you could organise fundraising and awareness events wherever you live. Visit www.boardfree.co.uk for full details on the BoardFree journey and its related causes. Two special ways to donate: 1) Sponsor a section: Each mile of the journey is worth £1. You can sponsor any number of miles as long as they're together. At the end of the journey you will receive a special photo taken during your part of the BoardFree journey. 2) Dare Dave: If you think a mere 5000 mile skate is a pushover then think of something bizarre for Dave to do during the Oz journey. You'll have to compensate your witty idea with a donation (of your choice, but with Dave's acceptance) but you will receive a photo of your dare being completed, and it might even get in the DVD! Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The charities will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. Every penny donated through this page will be shared equally between the Lowe Syndrome Trust, Link Community Development and Sailability Australia. Thanks for your support, every pound is appreciated! Dave Cornthwaite
