Story

15/01/10 - We've done it!!! With just 6 days to go, we've reached £10,000!! THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE WHO HAS DONATED, ATTENDED EVENTS AND SUPPORTED US!

If you haven't yet donated, please do feel free to keep the donations coming in! We absolutely don't mind beating our target :-) All that means is even more money to support Raleigh and the Prince's Trust!

We have set ourselves the ambitious target of raising £10,000 for Raleigh and the Princes Trust, and the challenge of  taking on the 4100m Mt Kinabalu - a tough and demanding 9-day expedition in the formidable location of the Malaysian Borneo.

The money raised will directly benefit 17-24 year-olds from disadvantaged backgrounds, giving them the life-changing opportunity to participate in a Raleigh expedition that will give them the confidence and self-belief to turn their lives around.

Extract from an article in The Independent:

Chris Murray went to Belize with Raleigh last year; it turned his life around, he says. "Three years ago, when I was 22, I was heavily involved with drugs and alcohol. I was kicked out of my home because I was aggressive to my mum and stepdad, so I was homeless. I was sleeping in bin bags, spending nights on people's floors. I ended up overdosing and going to hospital. My aunty told me about the Prince's Trust and I thought 'A week away - cool - and it's free.' " He was planning to do the week-long residential course and then leave, but at the end of seven days kayaking and abseiling in Wales, Raleigh International came to do a presentation. Lured by the prospect of the expedition, Chris began the training; he had an "amazing" time in Belize, promptly joined Raleigh as a volunteer and started a course as a youth worker. His ambition now is to work his way up to become a manager in a youth work project. Chris laughs at the idea that Raleigh is elitist. "You're working with people from Prince William to people like me, and whoever you are, you eat together, sleep together and you all s*** in the same hole." Capgemini has been working with Raleigh and The Princes Trust for many years, and the money we raise will go towards enabling young people like Chris from disadvantaged backgrounds to take part in activities that have this incredible and positive influence on their lives.
