The 23 September 2011 marks the date for the inaugural Bosom Buddies Ball which will take place in Mountains Country House Hildenborough, Kent to raise money for the Caron Keating Foundation.
The Bosom Buddies has been set up by Wendy Owens and Fiona Gordon who have been great friends for 10 years who last year were both diagnosed with breast cancer within 5 months of each other.
In October 2009, to compound an already distressing period in her life, Fiona discovered she had breast cancer just 2 days before her 40 birthday. A month later Fiona went through two operations and 6 months of chemotherapy and radio therapy, completing her treatment by the early summer.
One thing Fiona had on her side was plenty of close friends to support her, one of whom was Wendy. Three months into Fiona’s treatment Wendy discovered that she too had breast cancer. In May, Wendy had a mastectomy and like Fiona, she also underwent chemo and radio therapy.
Fiona’s treatments all finished in July 2010 and Wendy finished all her treatment in November 2010. Since then they have both had their first annual all clear and have both started to get their lives back together, hugely grateful for all the medical and counseling support they received. They now want to use this experience to help raise money for a charity very close to their hearts which is the Caron Keating Foundation. This is a fund raising charity set-up by Gloria Hunniford and her sons Paul and Michael.
The Caron Keating Foundation makes a considerable difference to many individuals and families affected and dealing with cancer. Their aim is to give a significant number of grants to small charities throughout Britain, as opposed to trying to raise money towards huge building projects or research which involves millions.
They try to make a difference by helping to fund pieces of machinery which detect cancer faster, counselling services, many different types of hospice care, drivers to take cancer patients to and from treatment centres; complementary therapies to help with pain control and bereavement counselling. It’s a family run Foundation with Gloria Hunniford as the administrator and their only costs are two part time secretaries, meaning that almost all the money raised goes directly to the projects.
Wendy and Fiona want to raise over £50,000 for this foundation by holding the Bosom Buddies ball. Tickets cost £75pp or £650 for a table of 10. For those who are unable to attend, they can make a donation by clicking the DONATE NOW button.
