My story

WE MAY HAVE REACHED OUR FUND-RAISING TARGET BUT PLEASE DON'T STOP DONATING. WE WANT TO SMASH OUR £10K TARGET AND RAISE AS MUCH MONEY AS POSSIBLE SO PLEASE GIVE, GIVE, GIVE.

Children are in desperate need after the worst earthquake to hit Haiti in 200 years. Starting at 12pm on Thursday 18th Feb, many BBHers are planning to undertake a 24 hour jog/cycle/row-a-thon and cover 7,190kms (that being the distance between the UK & Haiti) to raise money for Save the Children's Haiti appeal, which is helping to save children’s lives by providing shelter, clean water, food and medical assistance.

The earthquake hit about 10 miles south-west of Port-au-Prince, the densely-populated Haitian capital, leaving up to 200,000 people dead, 300,000 injured and around 800,000 to 1 million people homeless. Around half of all homes in the affected areas were damaged or destroyed. The earthquake hit in the afternoon when many children were in school and separated from their families. Many schools collapsed during the tremors.

Hundreds of thousands of children are sleeping in makeshift shelters in temporary camps, and are in dire need of shelter and support. The risk of outbreak of diseases is very high lack due to the lack of clean water and so many people living so close together in makeshift camps. The rainy season is expected to begin in late March, and is likely to exacerbate the unsanitary conditions.

What your donation could buy:

  • £20 — 3 tarpaulins or plastic sheets to provide basic shelter to protect families
  • £40 — 24 buckets to help families carry clean water
  • £50 - 21 mosquito kits to protect children from malaria
  • £500 — 20 student kits, containing notebooks, plastic water bottles, rucksacks and stationery
  • £1000 — 80 hygiene kits with essentials such as soap, detergent, toothpaste and toothbrushes
  • £5000 — shelter repair kits for 142 families whose homes have been damaged by the earthquake

As we like to set ourselves a challenge, we'd like to raise £10,000 to help as many people as possible.

Please dig deep and sponsor us today.
